TEXAS CRU is a community of students and staff who are seeking to love God and others at the University of Texas. We are trying to follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and we don’t even come close to perfect. But we know that Jesus Christ is our only hope, that we desperately need others to help us grow, and that we have been given a true purpose in this life. No matter where you are in this process, if you ever think about or desire any of these things: hope, change, purpose, truth; please join us as we pursue them as well.
That every UT student would be exposed to the Gospel in an ongoing way through students who love and follow Christ.
Gospel | We believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection is the only hope for all of us to be reconciled to our Creator and regain our true purpose and joy in this life and the next.
Community | We believe that the life shaped by the Gospel is lived in authentic Community, since we are freed to truly love others and be loved by them.
Mission | We believe that the life shaped by the Gospel is one on Mission, to live life on purpose to bring glory to God and to bless this world.
Student Leadership | We believe that students are the best people to reach students. So we value having students take ownership and lead the movement, while we provide training and development.
OUR STAFF TEAM
CHRIS NEWPORT-TEAM LEADER |We moved to Austin in 2013 because we wanted to be a part of what God is doing at the University of Texas. My wife, Lisa, is a southern girl from Georgia, and we have three kids: Luke who is 15, Anna Grace who is 13, and Claire who is 10. I love my family, sports, Dr. Pepper, theology, and Jesus, but hopefully not in that order. Also, I love college students and have given my life to help them know and love Jesus because what starts here changes the world, right?
KELSEY NEWMAN |I was born and raised in Lubbock, went to high school in Virginia, and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2010 with a degree in Biology. I met my husband, Dan, while at Virginia Tech through Cru and we got married in 2011. We moved to Austin shortly after. God recently blessed our family with Rebekah in May and I dare you to hold her and attempt to not smile. I enjoy baking, running, sports, being outdoors, reading, and laughing. I love good food and deep conversations. The two of them together is even better. I have been on staff with Cru for 6 years and am really passionate about students personally knowing Jesus and I enjoy walking with them on the adventure of seeing how that relationship affects our everyday life.
ANDREW BUCHANAN | I am from San Diego, California and just graduated from UC Berkeley in May 2016. While at Berkeley I was very involved in Cru and Athletes in Action. After graduating I wanted to get out of California for a few years and God opened up the door for me to come to Austin and serve as an intern on the UT staff team. Having played volleyball at Cal and being a member of Beta Theta Pi, I have a passion for athletics and those in the greek community . I’m excited to see what the Lord has in store for me in Austin serving at UT and ministering to college athletes and fraternity men. In my free time I love to surf, compete in a pick-up game of volleyball, football, or basketball, explore Austin, and express my California state pride. Go Bears, Hook ’em.
RACHEL WALDEN | I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and attended LSU. I was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and graduated in December of 2011 with a degree in Kinesiology. I enjoy meeting new people, running, hanging out with friends, concerts, food, and traveling. I am on staff Cru at UT this year and am very excited to see what awesome things God is going to do on this campus.
RACHEL CULWELL | I went to Texas A&M University and graduated in May of 2012 with a degree in International Studies. I was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and I grew significantly in my walk with the Lord in college through Cru’s Greek ministry at A&M. I am so excited to return to my Austin roots and be on staff at the University of Texas! I love live music, great company, chips and salsa, and a good brew of pour over coffee; all of which can be found in the ATX. I love helping college girls grow in their walks with the Lord and am looking forward to seeing students at UT know Jesus and grow in their relationship with Him!
WARREN CULWELL | My wife, Barbara, and I joined staff with Cru after graduating college because we wanted to be involved in reaching college students around the world. For the past 40 years I have invested energy into equipping staff and students on college campuses to be part of reaching the world. As a UT grad, I enjoy teaching and encouraging UT students to have their lives grounded in God’s Word. Barbara and I love living in Austin and spending time with our daughters, Lauren Claire and Rachel.
DJ GIARITELLI | I am a native of both New York and Oregon. In 2009, I decided to make the cross country trek to Alabama to play basketball at the University of Mobile. Though those dreams didn’t quite pan out, the Lord provided many other opportunities within Athletics and Campus Life to be involved. Since graduating, I’ve spent the last three years working at Mobile. This next year I am excited about the opportunity to combine my passion for sports and desire for others to know Christ by interning with Cru. In my spare time I enjoy traveling, watching and playing sports, running, hiking, eating and hanging out with my new wife, Brooke.
BROOKE GIARITELLI | I am a native of the beautiful Pacific Northwest growing up in Snohomish, Washington. After 18 years in Snohomish, I needed some sunshine, so I committed to the University of Texas to play soccer. While I was there to play soccer, it was these four years that shaped my life forever. After praying to receive Christ my freshman year, the Lord placed a burden in my heart to help point others to Him. I’ve been so blessed to spend these last three years involved with my Texas Cru family and am even more excited to be sticking around Austin as a Cru Intern. In my spare time I love hiking, running, days on the lake, a good cup of coffee, and of course plenty of soccer. Oh yea, and I just got married!
AMANDA HUNT | I was raised in San Marcos, Texas, a long 30 minutes away from my favorite city; Austin, where I studied exercise science at UT. While at UT, I stumbled upon a caring community called Cru, where I learned what it means to know God personally and actively follow Him. As an intern, I am excited to continue growing in my relationship with Him while also bringing students alongside me. In my spare time I enjoy getting outside, long talks with good friends, getting away from the Austin traffic, and watching the sunrise (with a big cup of coffee and a breakfast taco of course).
JIMMY WILLIAMS | I grew up on the central coast of California near Santa Barbara. I studied Electrical Engineering at UC Irvine, and after worked in marketing at Toshiba for 2 years. But God kept the tug on my heart to full-time ministry strong, so I left that job to join full-time with Cru. I’ve served in ministry for my first 5 years in California and Arizona, then led a mission team to Melbourne, Australia, for nearly 6 years. Now I’m excited to be here at the University of Texas! I’m married to Meagan and have 3 little girls: Rita, Selah, and Norah. In my free time, I like to hang with Meagan and the girls, to run, play sports, sing, and enjoy the magnificent meals that Meagan cooks.
